MUSIC FOR ENSEMBLE & ELECTRONICS
Glottogony
for large ensemble and electronics
2018
A few words about Glottogony:
Glottogony is a piece for large ensemble, conductor and electronics, commissioned and conducted by Steven Schick, premiered by RENGA. Glottogony (glotta: tongue/language + gone: genesis) explores the relationship between language and music, reenacting vocal and/or "linguistic" behaviors via music instruments. My research on music and language is deeply influenced by the work of Aniruddh Patel ("Music, Language and the Brain") and Diana Deutsch ("Musical Illusions and Phantom Words"); I became very interested in exploring the communicative/linguistic part of non-vocal music, and the musical part of language. Many people consider music to be a language, which is an argument challenged by Patel. In this piece, the exploration of affective states through the use of (sonic) communication tropes was one of the main inspiration: non-verbal vocal sounds, melodic contour of conversations, nursery rhymes, morse code, patterns of sonic communication between birds...
Peformance: RENGA ensemble, conducted by Steven Schick. University of California San Diego, 2018
